The Ontario Registered Music Teachers’ Association is excited to present the 2022 ORMTA Convention in Kingston at the beautiful Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts with the lead sponsorship of the DAN School of Drama and Music and Queen’s University’s Faculty of Arts and Science.

A highlight of these conventions is the opportunity to observe highly respected professional musicians guide young performers in becoming better and more informed musicians in a masterclass setting. These sessions are always informative and highly engaging and any interested individual in the Kingston community is encouraged to attend.

This masterclass for intermediate-level pianists with Valery Lloyd-Watts, is titled: Visualization: An Essential Tool for an Aural Art

Please note: the names, repertoire to be performed and short biographies of the young performers participating in this masterclass, will be posted on this webpage later in June.

At the age of four, Valery Lloyd-Watts began playing piano and made her debut with the Vancouver Junior Symphony Orchestra at age 12. Having received numerous awards by age 16, she was invited to perform with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Valery is a graduate, scholar and medalist of the Royal Conservatory of Music, Canada and received her Masters in Music from the University of Wisconsin. She was a scholar at the Royal College of Music, London where she played concerts and performed on the BBC.

After moving to Kingston, Ontario in 1970, she continued performing as well as developing the methods of Shinichi Suzuki as applied to piano. Valery and music partner, Carole L Bigler wrote Studying Suzuki Piano: More Than Music and Valery recorded the entire Suzuki repertoire. Wishing to share learning music with others, Valery and Carole created More Than Music, Inc. which presented an annual music camp, Suzuki Kingston, for 32 years.

Valery recorded over 50 CDs which include The Healing Heart of Music, Music for your Baby, Music for a Better Brain, Classically Romantic Piano and Great Movie Themes. She made an award-winning TV series, Music Meant for You, and travelled much of the Western world, performing and teaching. In 2008, the Women’s Executive Network (WXN) designated Valery one of Canada’s 100 Most Powerful Women. Valery Lloyd-Watts invites you to explore with her how music transforms sound into an emotional reaction. Performing some of the world’s finest classical music, Valery shares her understanding of this process, greatly enhancing how listeners perceive music.

In addition to the events taking place in the Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts Concert Hall that are open to the public, there are numerous sessions running throughout the days of July 22-24 on such topics as music pedagogy and music teaching resources and technology. Anyone can purchase a day pass to any day of the convention for $120 per day. Day passes can be purchased in-person on the desired day at a table in the IBCPA lobby or in advance at the following website which also provides a schedule of all convention activities:

The ORMTA 2022 Kingston Convention is grateful for the support of The Ballytobin Foundation in subsidizing the costs of presenting the convention’s events in the Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts Concert Hall. Additionally, ORMTA would like to acknowledge the lead sponsorship of this convention provided by Queen’s University’s DAN School of Drama and Music and the Faculty of Arts and Science.
